Thank you Mr. Guthrie

I have been sitting here for the last 20 minutes writing, deleting, rewriting and deleting and staring at the white space, trying to figure out how to convey my thoughts about what is happening currently in this “Land of Opportunity”. I’d rather not rewrite what all the media has portrayed for us. I would like to introduce you to the lyrics to a song by Woody Guthrie, called “This Land is Your Land” :

This land is your land
This land is my land
From California
To the New York island
From the redwood forest
To the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me.

As I was walking
That ribbon of highway
I saw above me
That endless skyway
I saw below me
That golden valley
This land was made for you and me.

There are probably more lyrics to the song, but every time I pass this song to my kids (and beginner adults !), I find them singing along while they try to play it on the piano. Their demeanor relaxes and their eyes start to shine. A simple folk song. So much meaning in those lyrics. So, my gift to all – the land is ours. Let’s enjoy it together. Let’s really enjoy it together.
